The team behind spacefaring superhero MMO Ship of Heroes have offered a fascinating insight into how MMO maps, dungeons and missions are created, with an over-the-shoulder view of the process from the development stage. For a game whose premise centers around a universe of super-powered space-farers ascending level after level of besieged ships, the video makes one thing clear: the developers are the real superheroes. 

The behind-the-scenes look was created as a response to the question that the Ship of Heroes devs have often been asked: how are mission maps created? Enter developer and man whose name is definitely not a superhero alias: James Smith, creator of instanced missions in the game. 

Like most things when demonstrated by professionals, the video makes it look easy. However James does briefly touch on the lengthy process that precedes this random map’s generation, with years having already been poured into developing and polishing the environmental art assets. Then, of course, there’s the post-generation patch work that is best left to the keen eyes and scrupulous standards that make up just two of the superpowers James received when he was bitten by a radioactive computer.

It’s also worth noting that the randomly-generated map we see is for one of many, many standard missions, whilst special locations and buildings are meticulously hand-crafted. What’s also worth noting is that, no, true procedurally-generated mission maps will not be a thing within Ship of Heroes as this requires giving the keys to the engine to the players, which means the players could change anything they liked. We needn’t go into why that is probably a bad idea. 

The Ship of Heroes dev-team has so far been very candid during their development process, with frequent updates via their official news page keeping prospective players in the loop. At this stage, the team is gunning for a 2021 release. So make sure you’re part of the community as this intriguing project continues to emerge.
